AUTOMATIC1111 / Use Case
AUTOMATIC1111 for Uncensored Image Generation
You want to generate images without cloud-imposed content filters. AUTOMATIC1111 does this out of the box — no safety checker to disable, no settings to toggle.
The tradeoff: it works, but newer tools do the same thing faster and with less hassle. Here's the full picture so you can decide.
About this Use Case
AUTOMATIC1111 is a local, offline AI image generation tool that is fully open source. It allows unrestricted content generation without filters.
The Problem
Cloud platforms decide what you can and can't generate. Prompts get blocked. Outputs get filtered. Accounts get banned. If you want full creative control, you need software that runs on your own hardware with no gatekeeper in the middle.
Can AUTOMATIC1111 Do This? (Short Answer)
Yes, and it's uncensored by default. The NSFW safety checker was removed from A1111's core code in December 2022. Unless you manually install the optional censor extension, there's nothing filtering your output.
How It Works for Uncensored Generation
Install A1111 on your machine — Python, Git, and an NVIDIA GPU with 6+ GB VRAM. Budget 30–60 minutes for the setup process including dependency installation.
Download models from CivitAI. The models themselves determine what content you can generate. Juggernaut XL, Realistic Vision v6, and DreamShaper XL are popular choices with no built-in restrictions.
Generate through the web UI. There's no prompt filter between you and the model. Type what you want, adjust your settings, and click generate. Everything runs locally and stays on your drive.
The optional censor extension exists if you want it — it replaces flagged images with black squares. But it's opt-in, not opt-out. By default, A1111 generates whatever the model can produce.
Where It Shines
- Uncensored by default: No safety checker to find and disable. No hidden content filters. The censor was moved to an optional extension years ago.
- Full privacy: Every prompt and every image stays on your machine. No cloud logging, no third-party servers, no account required.
- Huge model library: CivitAI has thousands of checkpoints and LoRAs designed for A1111. You won't run out of options.
- Extension ecosystem: ControlNet, ADetailer, regional prompting, and hundreds more. If you need a specific workflow, someone probably built an extension for it.
Where It Struggles
- Performance gap is real. A1111 takes ~11 seconds per SDXL image at 1024px. Forge handles the same generation in ~6 seconds — nearly twice as fast on identical hardware.
- VRAM overhead. ~10.7 GB for SDXL generation. Forge uses ~8–9 GB for the same output. If you have an 8 GB card, A1111 will crash on SDXL while Forge runs fine.
- No Flux model support. Flux produces the most photorealistic results available in 2026, but A1111 can't load these models. Forge and ComfyUI can.
- Stalled development. The original developer stopped maintaining A1111. Forge Neo is the community-maintained fork that gets new features and fixes.
Pro Tips
Don't bother disabling a safety checker — there isn't one. A1111 ships uncensored. If you see tutorials about toggling a safety setting, they're outdated (pre-2023). Just install and go.
Your model choice matters more than your frontend. A "censored" model will produce tame results no matter what UI you use. Pick models trained without content restrictions — CivitAI tags them clearly.
Consider switching to Forge. It's the same UI with the same uncensored behavior, but 30–75% faster and lower on VRAM. The migration takes about 10 minutes — same models folder, same extensions.
Alternatives for This Use Case
| Tool | Why You'd Pick It | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Forge | Same UI as A1111 but faster and lighter on VRAM | Still requires Python/Git setup |
| ComfyUI | Most flexible, supports Flux and latest models | Learning curve is steep (2–4 weeks) |
| LocalForge AI | Forge pre-configured, zero setup, uncensored models included | 50 USD one-time cost |
Verdict
A1111 is genuinely uncensored — no filters to disable, no hoops to jump through. On the other hand, it's the slowest and heaviest option available in 2026. Forge gives you the exact same uncensored experience with better speed and lower VRAM usage. ComfyUI gives you maximum flexibility if you're willing to learn nodes. A1111 still works, but there's not much reason to start with it today when better options exist at the same price: free.
