What Makes It Work
Forge is a fork of AUTOMATIC1111's Stable Diffusion WebUI, but the performance gap is massive. The SDPA attention implementation replaces xformers, and the VRAM management is completely rewritten. The result: models that crashed on 8 GB cards in A1111 run smoothly in Forge. The Best Way to Do It with Forge
Install Python 3.10 and Git. Grab them from python.org and git-scm.com. Takes about 5 minutes. Make sure Python is added to PATH during install.
Clone and launch Forge. Clone the repo from GitHub, then run

The Honest Downsides
Memory leaks are real. After extended sessions (50+ generations), Forge can spike RAM usage to the point of system freezes. Restarting the UI every hour or so during long sessions prevents this. The community is aware; fixes are in progress.
Browser tab must stay focused. Forge pauses generation if you minimize the browser or switch tabs. This affects batch generation workflows. A known Gradio limitation, not Forge-specific — but still annoying.
Flux needs serious VRAM. 12 GB minimum, 16 GB comfortable. If you're on an 8 GB card, you're limited to SDXL and SD 1.5 models. The quality gap between SDXL and Flux is real, but so is the hardware requirement.
Requires Python/Git knowledge. Not a lot — but if you've never opened a terminal, the initial setup is intimidating. One wrong Python version and you're debugging dependency conflicts instead of generating images.
When to Use Something Else
