ComfyUI vs AUTOMATIC1111 vs Forge — Pick One in 2026

All three run Stable Diffusion locally on your own GPU — none of them is cloud. The real question is which is still being updated, which fits your hardware, and which matches how you want to work. In 2026, Forge is the right default for tabbed UI users, ComfyUI wins for power users and Flux/video, and AUTOMATIC1111 is now the legacy pick.

The honest 2026 status check

Before the feature comparison, you need to know the project health, because two of the three are not what they were a year ago.

  • ComfyUI: very active. v0.20.1 shipped 2026-04-27, last push 2026-04-30, ~137 releases, 300+ contributors.
  • AUTOMATIC1111: in maintenance mode. Last real release was v1.10.1 on 2025-02-09 (a bug-fix). No native Flux, no native SD 3.5. The repo still gets minor pushes; the project doesn't get features.
  • Forge: the original lllyasviel/stable-diffusion-webui-forge hasn't been pushed since 2025-07-31. The active continuation is Forge Neo (Haoming02/sd-webui-forge-classic, neo branch), which is the one adding Flux.2, Wan 2.2 video, and RTX 50-series support.

If a tutorial says "use Forge in 2026," it usually means Forge Neo. We'll call it out explicitly below.

Per the Forge project notes, an SDXL 1024×1024 reference run lands around ~22s ComfyUI / ~24s Forge / ~28s A1111. Treat that as ballpark — sampler, scheduler, VAE, and GPU all move it. ComfyUI also wins more dramatically on batch jobs.

Speed and VRAM, by GPU tier

Where Forge actually pays off compared to A1111, per the Forge project:

  • 6 GB cards: 60–75% speedup vs A1111, plus 700 MB–1.3 GB lower peak VRAM. SDXL workflows that OOM in A1111 run.
  • 8 GB cards: 30–45% speedup. This is the sweet spot — Flux NF4/GGUF runs cleanly here.
  • 24 GB cards: 3–6% speedup. The bigger your GPU, the smaller Forge's edge — at the high end, ComfyUI is faster on raw SDXL anyway.

ComfyUI's claim is roughly 2× faster than A1111 in batch tests with ~40% less memory on equivalent workflows. That number depends heavily on graph complexity — small graphs, small wins; deep multi-stage pipelines, big wins.

What none of them do: invent VRAM. Quantization (NF4, GGUF) and tile tricks buy headroom. Nothing buys magic.

What each one is uniquely good at

ComfyUI's killer feature: the workflow is a file. Drag any ComfyUI-generated PNG back onto the canvas and the entire graph reloads — sampler, models, every node. You can version graphs in git, share them as JSON, or hand a senior artist's locked-down graph to the rest of the team via App Mode (shipped March 2026). No other frontend in this group has anything like it.

A1111's killer feature: the extension archive. It's the largest in the SD world, plus a decade of forum answers. If you're following an old tutorial that names exact tabs and screenshots, A1111 still matches them 1:1. Forge inherits "most" of those extensions, not all — so if the one you depend on is brittle, A1111 is the safe harbor.

Forge's killer feature: A1111 muscle memory at lower VRAM with Flux support. You don't relearn anything. You point Forge at your existing models folder and you're generating in 15 minutes. reForge, by the way, is dead since April 2025. If someone recommends it, they're working off old info.

What none of them do well

  • Cross-engine reproducibility. Same checkpoint, same seed, same settings ≠ same image across these three. Sampler code paths and VAE handling differ. Lock sampler, scheduler, VAE, and prompts before you compare.
  • Extension safety. All three run arbitrary Python from extensions or custom nodes. Treat installs as running code on your machine. Pull from trusted sources only.
  • Zero-thinking image generation. None of them ships a "type a sentence and get a beautiful image" mode. That's Fooocus's lane — if your goal is genuinely zero learning curve, look at the Fooocus vs Forge comparison instead.

Getting started, by path

You're starting fresh and want tabs. Install Forge Neo from Haoming02/sd-webui-forge-classic (one-click installers exist), or use the original lllyasviel repo if you want a frozen, stable build. Or use LocalForge AI if you'd rather skip the manual install and get a pre-configured local stack. Drop checkpoints into the models folder, launch, generate.

You're starting fresh and want maximum control. Install ComfyUI Desktop from comfy.org/download — it captured roughly 72% of new ComfyUI installs in 2025 because it removes the venv pain. Plan a weekend on tutorials before you'll be productive. The payoff is a workflow file you'll reuse for years.

You're already on A1111. Don't migrate just to migrate. Migrate when one of these is true: you want Flux native, you're hitting OOM on SDXL, or you're tired of the speed difference on a 6–8 GB card. Forge points at the same models folder and most of your extensions still work. Test your two or three deal-breaker extensions before you delete A1111.
